Getting Out of the Bath

The story

Pierre Bonnard painted his wife Marthe compulsively — bathing, dressing, at the mirror. This canvas belongs to that long, tender project. Notice how the whole room seems to hum in the same warm register: the ochre floor, the mauve walls, the rose skin. Bonnard famously reworked his paintings for years, sometimes returning to a museum with a brush in his pocket. He wanted the painting to feel like memory, not observation — softer at the edges, brighter than life in the middle.
